From mediocrity to mastery: Unlocking AI image alchemy

Most AI images look like AI images. That sameness isn't a failure of the model — it's a failure of the brief. A prompt that says “a hero image for a tech company” returns exactly the generic thing you asked for.

Mastery starts with treating the model like a junior you're art-directing, not a vending machine. Give it a palette, a light source, a lens, a reference to the brand's visual language. Tell it what to avoid. The difference between a throwaway render and a usable one is almost never more words — it's more specific ones.

Then comes the craft layer: the image you can type is rarely the image your layout needs. Cropping, compositing, re-tinting, drawing type by hand on top — the alchemy is what happens after the generation, in the hands of a designer who knows what a good result looks like.

The models keep improving, and that's welcome. But the floor is rising faster than the ceiling on taste. The brands that stand out won't be the ones with the biggest compute — they'll be the ones with the clearest point of view, applied relentlessly.
